The Fig Tree Children has been helping orphans in Sierra Leone since October 2014. Our efforts provide love, care and education for orphaned children, ‘one child at a time’.
The Ebola epidemic reopened old wounds and created a second wave of orphans following the devastation of the ten year Civil War. A staggering 12,000 children have now been left orphaned. Some have found homes with extended families, but thousands risk exploitation, discrimination and malnutrition.
Our efforts are focused in Sierra Leone where we provide a monthly allowance to the sponsored child’s carer and we pay the school fees directly to the school they attend, through donations and direct child sponsorship.

“You can’t miss what you’ve never had.”
It’s a phrase I’ve heard often, sometimes about yachts or luxury holidays. But what about the basics?
Toilet paper. Sanitary pads. Clean water. A light to study by at night.
Are these really luxuries? Or are they dignities that everyone should have access to, whether they’ve grown up with them or not?
The truth is, you can’t miss what you’ve never had…
But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve it.
In the photos, you can see:
1. One of the girls in The Fig Tree Children’s programme is holding 12 month’s supply of sanitary pads we gave her that she now uses each month.
2. Another washing his hands and uniform with soap we donated, courtesy of Soap Aid
3. Another is doing his homework using his SolarBuddy light instead of sitting in the darkness.
None of these things is extravagant. But they change everything.
Let’s not wait for someone to know what they’re missing before we step in.

This is more than a toilet block — it’s a life-saving gift. 💛🚽
Until recently, these orphaned children in a remote village near Bo Town had no choice but to go into the bush, where two children tragically lost their lives from snake bites. Today, thanks to your support and the unwavering leadership of Safiatu Beatrice Farma, they now have a safe and hygienic toilet block — something many of us take for granted.

“You can’t miss what you’ve never had.”
It’s a phrase I’ve heard often, sometimes about yachts or luxury holidays. But what about the basics?
Toilet paper. Sanitary pads. Clean water. A light to study by at night.
Are these really luxuries? Or are they dignities that everyone should have access to, whether they’ve grown up with them or not?
The truth is, you can’t miss what you’ve never had…
But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve it.
In the photos, you can see:
1. One of the girls in The Fig Tree Children’s programme is holding 12 month’s supply of sanitary pads we gave her that she now uses each month.
2. Another washing his hands and uniform with soap we donated, courtesy of Soap Aid
3. Another is doing his homework using his SolarBuddy light instead of sitting in the darkness.
None of these things is extravagant. But they change everything.
Let’s not wait for someone to know what they’re missing before we step in.
Let’s act, knowing that some dignities are universal.
