The Fig Tree Children has been helping orphans in Sierra Leone since October 2014. Our efforts provide love, care and education for orphaned children, ‘one child at a time’.
The Ebola epidemic reopened old wounds and created a second wave of orphans following the devastation of the ten year Civil War. A staggering 12,000 children have now been left orphaned. Some have found homes with extended families, but thousands risk exploitation, discrimination and malnutrition.
Our efforts are focused in Sierra Leone where we provide a monthly allowance to the sponsored child’s carer and we pay the school fees directly to the school they attend, through donations and direct child sponsorship.

She lives with her dad, who once sold his only sewing machine just to keep food on the table and make sure she could stay in school.
He never had the chance to be educated himself and he’s determined that his daughter will.
That kind of love… it says everything.
Through The Fig Tree Children, we were able to replace his sewing machine and support them both, helping him get back on his feet while making sure Mariatu* can continue her education.

Meet Hawa* 💛
She lost both of her parents at a young age and was left in the care of her elderly grandmother, living in a small thatch-roofed home in a remote village. Life was especially difficult during the rainy season, and school simply wasn’t possible.
But Hawa* had something special. She was bright, determined, and eager to learn.
With support, everything began to change.
Today, Hawa* is no longer just a girl with potential — she is now on placement in a hospital as a nurse. 🩺✨

Meet Fatu* 🧡
Fatu* lost both of her parents at a very young age. After her father passed away during the Ebola crisis, she was taken in by a close friend of her mother, someone who cared deeply for her, but simply didn’t have the means to support her education.
That’s where this community stepped in.
Today, Fatu* is no longer just a young girl trying to get by, she is now at university studying Business Administration (Procurement). 🎓
It’s a powerful reminder of what support can do. One opportunity can change the direction of a life.

This is Mustapha* 🧡
Some of you may remember his brother, Abdul, who was also part of our programme. Sadly, Abdul passed away in July last year after collapsing unexpectedly. It was a heartbreaking time for the family.
Today, Mustapha is continuing to move forward. He lives with his mum and is now in his second year of an apprenticeship, learning to become an electrician.
It’s not always a straight path for the children we support. Life can be incredibly hard. But with encouragement, stability, and people who believe in them, young people like Mustapha are able to keep going and build a future for themselves.

Life has not been easy for her. She lost her mother at a very young age and has since been cared for by a kind neighbour who stepped in when she needed it most.
A few years ago, she was diagnosed with sickle cell, and for a time her illness was misunderstood. But today, with the right care and support, she is back where she belongs — in school, learning and growing alongside other children her age.
Stories like hers remind us how important it is for children to have people around them who care, advocate, and believe in their future.

Meet Mariatu* 💛
She lives with her dad, who once sold his only sewing machine just to keep food on the table and make sure she could stay in school.
He never had the chance to be educated himself and he’s determined that his daughter will.
That kind of love… it says everything.
Through The Fig Tree Children, we were able to replace his sewing machine and support them both, helping him get back on his feet while making sure Mariatu* can continue her education.
Sometimes, it’s not about changing everything.
It’s about stepping in at the right moment and helping a family keep going.
