The Fig Tree Children has been helping orphans in Sierra Leone since October 2014. Our efforts provide love, care and education for orphaned children, ‘one child at a time’.
The Ebola epidemic reopened old wounds and created a second wave of orphans following the devastation of the ten year Civil War. A staggering 12,000 children have now been left orphaned. Some have found homes with extended families, but thousands risk exploitation, discrimination and malnutrition.
Our efforts are focused in Sierra Leone where we provide a monthly allowance to the sponsored child’s carer and we pay the school fees directly to the school they attend, through donations and direct child sponsorship.

That’s the score Amina* recently achieved in Sierra Leone’s National Primary School Examination. An achievement she and her mum have every reason to be proud of.
But behind that result is a much bigger story.
Amina’s mum never had the educational opportunities her daughter has today. Now, Amina is learning, growing and taking another step towards a future filled with possibilities.
She is also a Muslim girl attending a Catholic school. Something that may sound unusual to some, but is beautifully ordinary in Sierra Leone. Children of different faiths learn together, laugh together, play together and grow up together. 🌱
And behind Amina’s journey is someone who chose to believe in her.
Her sponsor, Niall, helped give one little girl access to opportunities she may otherwise never have had.

Meet Tony* — a 14-year-old boy in Sierra Leone whose life changed when one person chose to sponsor his education.
His story is a reminder that when you support a child’s education, the impact can reach far beyond the classroom. It can bring hope, opportunity and change to an entire family.
Today, Tony is facing an unimaginable loss. But because someone believed in his future, he can keep learning, dreaming and moving forward.
This is Episode 1 of Behind Every Smile — a new series sharing the real stories of the children and families behind The Fig Tree Children. 🌳
And right now, there are 52 children preparing to return to school.
We’re working to raise $6,000 to cover their school fees, so they too can continue learning and building towards a brighter future.
Tony’s story shows us what can happen when a child is given that opportunity.

Their school materials are being taken care of. Now, we need to raise approximately $6,000 to cover their school fees and make sure they can continue their education.
For these children, going back to school means so much more than returning to a classroom. It means opportunity, stability, hope, and another step towards the future they’re working so hard for.

Sometimes, it takes a community to change one child’s life. ❤️
When Chrissie* lost the grandmother who had been caring for her, she was left without the stability and family support every child deserves.
But she wasn’t left to face it alone.
Through the combined efforts of FAYTES, the Ravera Children’s Rehabilitation Center (RCRC), and The Fig Tree Children, Chrissie now has a safe home where she can receive the care, protection and support she needs to heal at her own pace. 🌱
And today, we have some beautiful news to share.
Chrissie is settling in, making new friends, and plans are underway to enrol this bright little girl in primary school. 📚❤️
Thanks to her wonderful sponsor, Mary, her school fees, materials and ongoing support will be provided as she begins this next chapter.

That’s the score Amina* recently achieved in Sierra Leone’s National Primary School Examination. An achievement she and her mum have every reason to be proud of.
But behind that result is a much bigger story.
Amina’s mum never had the educational opportunities her daughter has today. Now, Amina is learning, growing and taking another step towards a future filled with possibilities.
She is also a Muslim girl attending a Catholic school. Something that may sound unusual to some, but is beautifully ordinary in Sierra Leone. Children of different faiths learn together, laugh together, play together and grow up together. 🌱
And behind Amina’s journey is someone who chose to believe in her.
Her sponsor, Niall, helped give one little girl access to opportunities she may otherwise never have had.
